The Architect’s Sketchbook

Mitchell Gallery, State Library of New South Wales, 1998, with guidebook.

The Architect’s Sketchbook considered the domestic designs of architects including Sir John Sulman, Leslie Wilkinson, Harry Seidler and Jørn Utzon, contrasting the traditional house with more abstract versions. Unlike the bound sketchbooks shown in the exhibition, contemporary sketches were suspended in a sequence demonstrating the creative process, the pages seeming to unfold themselves.

“It is so rare to come across an exhibition which mirrors our surroundings with such thought and beauty.”

(Cerentha Harris, The Sydney Morning Herald, 1 May 1998.)

Entrance to the exhibition, showing the introductory etching to Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi … 1778.
